Great snow terrain at the North Pole, outstanding details to the Washington buildings, and exquisite attention to detail in the cars themselves can be picked up right away. First a number of realistic textures have been mapped across the new environments. Graphics Twisted Metal 3 uses a number of killer special effects to enhance its look over previous versions. In terms of strategy, it appears that one-on-one killing is still the best way to take out the enemy, unless of course, there is more to uncover. That lovely little freeze and destroy technique is still as effective as ever.
They're easier to pull off than ever, and with a solid fleet of weapons lying across the terrain, it's easy to just let yourself go. Remember combos? They're are back with a vengeance. And, just as players have asked, 989 created a bunch of levels that are specifically designed for multiplayer get-togethers. That's right, four real live people can hook up via link cable, instead of the previous standard up just two players.
Probably the best new (and most addicting) feature is the four-person Multiplayer mode. Also, a handy map identifying the location of each enemy is on-screen at all times. As with previous versions, players can see behind themselves and shoot backward as well, which is key when being tailed. They spin out when taking turns too fast, and flip or lose grip in water or other liquid matter. Cars twist and lurch forward or backward in air when jumping off ramps. With a new physics model, dubbed 'TruPhyics,' 989 Studios has realized a more realistic feel to the cars than in previous versions. That's 11, and there should be as many as 12 cars in total, plus maybe a few bonus cars, perhaps. The big list includes both returning cars and brand new ones: Firestarter (a '50s hot rod), Club Kid (a tiny little Honda), Axel (a giant, two-wheeled standup), Auger (a construction vehicle with a scary front-end drill), Warthog (your standard Hummer), Thumper (a purple low rider), Sweet Tooth (your favorite ice cream truck), Flower Power (a female-driven VW Bug) Grimm (a side-car motorcycle), Hammerhead (a grandma in a four-wheel monster truck), and Minion (six-wheeled tank). Gameplay As many as 12 cars are available in the game, each with its own built-in weapons and specialties. And with only a little luck, Twisted Metal 3 looks to take it away from Activision's compelling Vigilante 8. Having picked up the game from SingleTrac, which developed the first two versions of the game, 989 Studios hopes to retake the throne of the car combat genre with Twisted Metal 3.
